Check out “Transcriptions” for a link to Miles Davis’ solo on Milestones.
You’ll notice there are certain spots in the tune where he plays the exact same pattern (or a slight variation). You should be able to easily identify 2 or 3 of these.
Enjoy.
I’m just writing to let you guys know about this new website I found yesterday. James Mahone is a sax man living in Japan. He has some wonderful transcriptions and .mp3 clips of the solos.
Of particular interest to me were the Mulgrew Miller and Cedar Walton transcriptions of Hindsight.

I’ve had the Hal Galper transcription done for a while now so I figured it’s time I post it. Take notice of which notes fall on beats 2 and 4 of each measure. You’ll find that Hal likes to emphasize the 5th and 9th most frequently.
Choices for 9th and 5th resolutions for Major, Minor, and Dominant:
Major: b5 (#11), 5, #5, and natural 9th
Minor: 5, b5 (infers half dimminished), natural 9th
Dominant: anything goes, try 5, b5, #5, 9, b9, #9
Have fun, and make sure to explore all options!
Also take note of a new “Favorites” section to my transcription section. If you know a transcription I should check out, please send it my way!

I have loaded two recent live recording takes form recent gigs. One is solo and one is trio.
I also made the upgrade today so that I can stream audio and video directly from WordPress. This should make it easier for those who have complained of problems with DivShare.
Also recently added is the photo and venue section. I’m sure I’m missing some venues so if you see one that isn’t on there be sure and let me know!
There will also be some new transcriptions soon. I am currently working on snippets of Brad Mehldau’s solo on Anthropology and Dave Kikowski on In Your Own Sweet Way. Be sure to message me if you have any requests.
Thanks,
Tj
This is an interesting one for sure! This is the solo break from Night in Tunisia off of The Amazing Bud Powell Vol. 1.
What always boggles me after reading through a completed transcription is the sheer simplicity of the improvisor’s note choice. In other words, what sounds complicated isn’t necessarily so hard.
Another thing I have noticed is how much of a soloist’s ideas are often worked out. The advent of “alternate tracks” on modern cds is to thank for this. On the “alternate track” of A Night in Tunisia, Bud Powell plays an almost identical solo break. His stumbling over a couple of notes, as well as the very odd ending, is most likely the reason for it not being chosen over the first track. Anyway, on to the transcription… Read the rest of this entry »
Recorded this one a couple months ago. I laid down my track while soloing and comping for a non existent partner. Then L2L filled in the holes after I sent him my recording. This is “Solar” by Miles Davis.
